The folks over at AppleInsider are at it again. According to recently published news from them, Apple is preparing a new batch of machines that will support HDMI, both directly and indirectly. They also claim that a revised Mini DisplayPort is on its way to facilitate the plan.
According to the Apple rumors blog, Apple is finally replacing the DVI port on its Mac Minis with HDMI. According to the image accompanying the post as proofm the HDMI port will be sitting next to the existing Mini DisplayPort outlet. Apple is apparently doing this because the current HDMI standard carries both HD audio and video over one single port and cable as opposed to the current Mini DP standard that does not do audio.
The bad news is that the rumor also states that Apple is using MCP89 chipset from NVIDIA. That chipset is only used with Core 2 Duo chips, which means the new Mac Minis will not be upgraded to the latest chips along the line of Core i3, i5 or i7. This is only a rumor though and makes me questin why Apple would risk falling behind in the upgrade curve. Not that the Mac Mini is a huge best seller or anything but why would they not upgrade? Since this is Apple, they actually might do exactly what this rumor is saying. So all bets are off for now.
Apple is also apparently trying to solve this problem with all the other Macs that they have. They had apparently developed a proprietary DisplayPort-to-HDMI adapter that took both audio and video signals from a modified Mini DisplayPort and transferred it to HDMI. This was allegedly developed for the rumored Blu-ray enabled iMacs that never happened. So this time around, rumor has it that Apple will include this modified Mini DisplayPort on other Macs, like the MacBooks.
Apple has been religiously shunning HDMI for a long time and going back to that older standard would look really foolish. So supporting it this way and combining both audio and video are both actually in Apple’s best interests right and there aren’t any other alternatives that as efficient as this one. So over all, if this rumor is proved to be true, Macs will become even more entertaining than they already are.
